Use this service to register a birth.

Before you start

If your baby was born in Scotland, you can register the birth at any registration office in Scotland.

You should register the birth within 21 days if you can, or at the next available appointment after that.

When attending your appointment you'll need to bring:

  • your notification card from hospital
  • a marriage or civil partnership certificate (if applicable)

Who can register a birth?

Either parent if:

  • married to each other
  • in a civil partnership

The mother if parents are:

  • unmarried
  • not in a civil partnership

If parents are not married to each other or not in a civil partnership together, both parents must attend the registrar's office for both their names to be included on the birth certificate. If this is not possible contact our registrar's team. A relative can register a birth in exceptional circumstances. contact our registrar's team if you need more information about this.

You can book a face to face appointment at our Eastwood Headquarters and Barrhead offices.

A single appointment slot will be needed for single and twin birth registrations. For other multiple birth registrations contact our registrar's team .

Telephone appointments

Birth registrations can be made by telephone. To register a birth by telephone, contact our registrar's team to arrange an appointment.

You'll need to send us a copy of the notification hospital card and marriage or civil partnership information (if applicable) before your appointment. We'll give you details of where to send it when you call to make your appointment.

Parent signatures on birth certificates created during a telephone appointment will be transcribed by the Registrar to reflect how your signature normally reads.

What happens next?

Attend your chosen registration office at your selected appointment date and time with the notification hospital card and marriage or civil partnership certificate (if applicable).

If you have chosen a telephone appointment you will be called by one of our registrars at the date and time of your appointment. Copies of registration certificates will be posted to you.

Documents we'll give you:

  • Abbreviated birth certificate
  • Form EC58, which lets you register your child with a GP

There's no cost for these documents.

Additional documents

You can purchase a full copy of the birth certificate or multiple copies, at your appointment. A full copy certificate and each additional copy cost £10.00. We accept card payments by telephone and you can pay by card or cash at our Barrhead office. We do not accept cash payments at our Eastwood office.
