Legionella bacteria cause Legionnaires' disease and other illnesses such as Pontiac fever. These are infections with serious consequences. Spa pools (hot tubs) create ideal conditions for Legionella bacteria. The agitation of the water creates droplets which are inhaled by users and others nearby.
Some very large outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease have been caused by spa pools, even when they have not actually been in use. HSE consider the risk from Legionella to be very serious and it is a priority both for HSE and for East Renfrewshire Council.
