East Renfrewshire sets scene for safe summer

East Renfrewshire Council, Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are reminding young people that as Covid-19 restrictions ease, it is important that everyone remembers their responsibilities for the safety of themselves and others.  

Whilst it is important that young people are able to socialise again and enjoy the opportunities that the relaxation of restrictions affords, it is also essential that the rules in place are followed and that when young people are out and about, they avoid locations where they could endanger their physical safety, such as around reservoirs, disused quarries and farmland.

At present, up to eight people aged over 12 from a maximum of eight households are able to meet together outdoors.

Across East Renfrewshire there are a wide range of different activities that young people are able to access and the Council is working to ensure that more of these are available in the coming weeks and months as we all recover from the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Convener for Community Services & Community Safety, Councillor Colm Merrick said: 'We know the pandemic has been especially tough on our young people, so I am pleased that restrictions are beginning to ease and there are more opportunities for socialising and activities.  Parent/Carers and our young people will still have the responsibility to ensure that the guidance is being followed and no-one is being put at any form of risk. We are grateful for our residents' continued support in ensuring children and young people can socialise safely for the benefit of our wider community and I hope everyone has a refreshing and happy summer break.'

Chief Inspector Alan Gray, Area Commander, East Renfrewshire, Greater Glasgow Police Division, added: 'More than ever before, this year will see a summer when we anticipate our residents will look to enjoy the many parks and open spaces East Renfrewshire has to offer.
