Peter and Irene's Story

'First cuddle is always the best'

Peter and Irene's Story

For Irene and Peter Wright, the rewards of fostering have been many over two decades of taking in children and young people.

And they never forget the moments that make what they do so worthwhile.

"We started our foster care journey with short respite care for families of children with additional needs but we soon recognised we could do more and over the years we've taken care of 20 young people." says Irene.

"The importance of what we do really hit home when a mum crossed the street to thank us for, in her words, 'giving us back a daughter that we now know how to look after.'

"It felt wonderful to know that we'd helped that family through a difficult spell.

"The worst bit is having to say goodbye - it's never easy, but we keep in touch with many of our young people.

"The best bit is when you see a child relaxing and realising they can trust you.

"One of the most memorable moments for us was with a little one-year-old girl who finally, after a full month with us, lifted her arms to be lifted.

"Although this seems simple, we knew then we'd gained her trust and what we were doing was working.

"The first cuddle is always the best - you feel them relax and you know you've broken in - they feel safe and secure."
