Choosing early learning and childcare
All 3 and 4 year olds, and some 2 year olds, qualify for 1140 hours of funded early learning and childcare which can be offered in different ways.
You can apply to have all your early learning and childcare in one setting or split between 2, such as a nursery and a childminder.
Council run early learning and childcare
Nursery classes
Nursery classes are located in primary schools and provide early learning and childcare for 3 and 4 year olds
Nursery classes are open during term time, the same as schools.
In a nursery class, you get 30 hours a week.
In a nursery class you can apply for:
- 5 days a week from 9am to 3pm, or
- 3 days a week from 8am to 6pm
Family centres
Family Centres are open all year round, except for public holidays and school in-service days.
In a family centre, you get 23 hours and 45 minutes a week throughout the year or 30 hours a week term time (core hours only - limited provision).
In a family centre you can apply for:
- 5 mornings a week from 8am to 12.45pm, or
- 5 afternoons a week from 1pm to 5.45pm over 48 weeks, or
- 2.5 days a week over 48 weeks. For example, 2 days from 8am to 5.30pm and one half day from 8am to 12.45pm, or
- 5 days a week from 9am to 3pm over 38 weeks.

We work with a number of partnership nurseries and childminders across East Renfrewshire.
Each setting will have its own opening times and may be open during term time or year round, you can find more details in the application pack.
