Get involved in your child's education

Find out how you can get involved in your child's education.

Our staff and parents work in partnership to develop appropriate opportunities in the learning of children and young people.

This partnership continues to seek new ways of encouraging and developing parental interest, leading to more effective home-school communication.

How to promote parental involvement

  • Schools and parents work in co-operation to ensure that parental involvement in the life of the school is positive, purposeful and mutually supportive
  • Schools and parents work in partnership in shaping the school's vision, values and aims
  • All information which impacts on a child's education and learning is shared effectively between parents and schools
  • Learning at home is valued by schools and parents and designed to ensure partnership working supports that learning
  • Decision making opportunities provide appropriate settings to enable the views of parents to inform positive outcomes

The parental engagement strategy sets out the ways in which we'll support and encourage parental involvement in children's learning and the work of our service.

Parent councils

Parent councils have a key role to play in helping more parents to become involved in the life of the school and their child's learning.

Visit Education Scotland - Parentzone to find out more about parent councils (opens new window).

We support our parent councils by:

  • helping parents who wish to set up a parent council in a new school
  • offering guidance and advice with local issues
  • paying for membership to Connect, which includes insurance cover
  • providing specific training to allow parent council members to be involved in the recruitment of head teachers and deputes
  • meeting with parent council chairs each term
  • inviting a representative to our Equalities Forum each term

Parent councils are run by parents. Most school websites include contact information for the parent council.
