The Consumer Protection Act 1987 and the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 were made to hold manufacturers accountable for producing unsafe goods. Businesses have a duty to supply only safe consumer products, which must meet with all relevant safety regulations. Importing unsafe products may result in the business having to pay back someone who is injured. This action could be taken in addition to any criminal prosecution.

Product recalls and dangerous consumer products
The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) contains a list of product safety notices and recalls. If you're worried about the safety of a product, make your concern clear to the retailer, manufacturer and your local Trading Standards section.

Child safety at home
East Renfrewshire Trading Standards has a Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) trained member of staff who can carry out a short child home safety visit at a suitable time for you where advice and assistance can help ensure your home is as safe as possible from a toddler's perspective. They've a wealth of information on unsafe products including:
- Button cell batteries
- Blind cords
- Laundry capsules
- Nappy sacks
- Poisoning
- Scalds and burns
- Firework safety
