How we ensure best value

Find out how we ensure best value in the delivery of our services.

What is best value?

The duty of Best Value is a statutory duty that applies to all public bodies, including all councils.

Best Value ensures "that there is good governance and effective management of resources, with a focus on improvement, to deliver the best possible outcomes for the public" (Audit Scotland).

As part of its Best Value duty, East Renfrewshire Council must be able to demonstrate a focus on continuous improvement in performance across all services. The duty covers these themes:

  • Vision and leadership
  • Governance and accountability
  • Effective use of resources
  • Partnerships and collaborative working
  • Working with communities
  • Sustainability
  • Fairness and equality

For more information on the duty of Best Value. Read the latest government guidance. There's an annual scrutiny of the Council's arrangements for Best Value as part of the yearly external audit process.

External organisations

We have a range of methods for assessing the quality of our services.

In addition to internal assessment processes, there's also a group of organisations that inspect our services, identifying good practice, suggesting areas where we can improve and reporting where good practice is evident. These organisations include Audit Scotland, the Scottish Housing Regulator, Education Scotland and the Care Inspectorate.
