About Whitelee
Information about Whitelee Windfarm - the largest on-shore windfarm in the UK.
The Whitelee Visitor Centre
The visitor centre is open 7 days a week 10am to 5pm (Café closes at 4.30pm). Whitelee windfarm and car parks remains open 24/7 for responsible outdoor recreational access, however, please note that there is no access to toilets whilst the visitor centre is closed. The Whitelee Countryside Ranger Service remains present on-site throughout the year.
Since opening to the public in 2009, Whitelee has welcomed over a million visitors and become a popular venue for outdoor recreation. Sitting across parts of East Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire and East Ayrshire council areas, Whitelee's 215 turbines provide 539MW of renewable energy - enough to power the equivalent of 350,000 homes.
Whitelee's large network of paths and tracks - extending to over 130km - are popular with walkers, cyclists and other recreational users.
A number of signposted routes are available including the popular Blackwood Hill Viewpoint, Lochgoin Circuit and a series of longer routes throughout the windfarm.
Whitelee also has a network of single-track mountain biking trails located a short distance from Whitelee Visitor Centre. The windfarm can be accessed at all times. not just during visitor centre opening hours.
Whitelee has a rich and varied history with an abundance of historical and cultural features still evident today. These include the Covenanters Museum at Lochgoin Farm as well as a number of cairns and monuments scattered throughout the windfarm.
The site also supports a wide range of important habitats and species, with considerable efforts being made to safeguard and improve the site for wildlife.
We work with landowners and Scottish Power Renewables - the windfarm operator - to support public use of the site and manage a team of Whitelee countryside rangers working across Whitelee. The site also hosts numerous events throughout the year.
